Substation Installation, Testing & Commissioning

Testing and commissioning of substation electrical equipment is an important and critical activity. This activity is of vital importance and is influential in ensuring the health of equipment. AYT Engineers have excellent knowledge of the testing

Substation Installation, Testing & Commissioning

Engineer carrying out secondary injection testing on substation protection relays in Qatar

Pre-commissioning testing, diagnostic measurement and commissioning of substation electrical equipment, from LV distribution up to 400kV transmission, for utility, oil and gas, industrial and infrastructure projects across Qatar.

Why testing and commissioning decides the outcome

Testing and commissioning is the point where the health of the equipment is actually established. Test results have to be evaluated, accepted or rejected, and a decision made on whether each item is fit to energise. Getting it right ahead of schedule surfaces faults before they reach the client, and saves the time, cost and rework that come with finding them afterwards.

Pre-commissioning testing

  • Pre-commissioning tests on all substation equipment, to the relevant IEC standards
  • Test procedures and equipment selected against the rating and specification of the equipment under test
  • Validation of site results against factory acceptance test data
  • Safety interlock verification before energisation

Protection and relay work

  • Pre-commission testing of protection relays by secondary injection
  • Parameterisation of numerical relay functional elements against the relay coordination document
  • Relay setting and coordination studies
  • Testing and calibration of protection relays on existing installations

Diagnostics and earthing

  • Diagnostic tests and measurements on substation equipment, with reference data recorded for future comparison
  • Partial discharge measurement, including online measurement at 220kV and 400kV
  • Overall earthing system resistance measurement using the methods specified in IEEE 998
  • Condition assessment of distribution substation equipment
