Why switchgear needs a maintenance plan
Switchgear maintenance, testing and regular inspection are safety measures before they are anything else. Some components are described as needing no additional care, but they still need periodic inspection to confirm they function. A preventive care plan is the first step toward dependable operation.
As a general guide, inspection and maintenance should run at three to six month intervals on newly installed equipment, and every one to two years on existing equipment.
What an inspection covers
- Physical damage, cracked insulation and broken leads
- Tightness of connections and defective wiring
- Overall general condition of the enclosure, indoor or outdoor type
- Verification that primary and secondary fuse and circuit breaker ratings match the drawings
- Correct functioning of drawout, disconnecting and earthing contacts and interlocks
- Condition of protection relays, current transformers and voltage transformers
Repair and corrective maintenance
- Fault diagnosis from test results and thermographic findings
- Contact, mechanism and interlock repair
- Protection relay, CT and VT replacement
- Circuit breaker servicing and overhaul
- Retermination and busbar repair
